Working from home, I usually prescribe to the same daily uniform: yoga pants and an oversized, el-cheapo fleece hoody. Not exactly glamour. But the kind folk at The Facial Company approached Wellness WA to review their Skype live video consultation service, sending me into a panic because, my god, I may have to brush my hair and slap on a decent top.

However, there was no need to work myself into such a frenzy as founder and beauty expert Darren Clark instantly made me feel at ease via Skype video. After a couple of technical issues, Darren proceeded with the 20 minute consultation, asking me my skin concerns. I have combination skin and no major breakouts and just wanted to look at preventing future breakouts and wrinkles.

Darren also asked me what skin care I was using. My answer: not much, other than a basic pharmacy cleanser and whatever moisturiser sample I find at the bottom of my drawer. I half-expected the hard sell on products stocked on The Facial Company’s web store, but instead was given honest feedback – that the glycolic acid in my current cleanser is an excellent choice in preventing wrinkles (woohoo!). He also suggested a couple of moisturiser options to hydrate my skin and gave informative advice based on what he could see through the video, darkness under the eyes, most likely caused from sitting in front of a computer all day.

This could be you! Lying in bed, getting your skin assessed. You may have to turn on the light though!

Darren also told me about a success story – an older customer who was fed up with her skin woes, testing a heap of products over the years that never seemed to work. In a last bid attempt, she contacted The Facial Company for a 20 minute consultation. Taking Darren’s advice, she tried a few different products and was so impressed with the results that she booked another consultation. She is now truly on the quest for skin perfection that she never thought was possible.

Obviously the great advantage to this system is that you don’t even have to get out of your pjs to receive solid, professional advice. I can see this as a perfect solution to those beauty lovers out there that live in rural areas, or people that may not have access to a big range of skin care products. Also, it’s perfect for guys that want to get into a skin regime without feeling intimidated.

To book a Skype live video consultation, the process is very simple:

♥	Visit the website facialcompany.com.au and click on the Skype live consultations link.
♥	Fill out the form, selecting the date that suits you best and submit.
♥	Pay your $10 (redeemable for any online purchase).
♥	And voila! A team member from The Facial Company will confirm your appointment with you.

You’ll also need to make sure you have a microphone, a web cam, sound, internet access and Skype (which can be downloaded for free). Too easy.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from the service but I was really impressed with Darren’s feedback and he’s a lovely guy to boot.

Review by Jess – a chocolate doughnut loving, fashion stylist extraordinaire with an extreme penchant for olives.

Be well,

xoxo

I was recently presented with the opportunity to send a Pamper Boxes gift box to someone I knew, I thought it would be a really fun experiment as sometimes our friends and loved ones need a treat, a wellbeing boost to let them know they are being thought of.

I decided on the lucky friend and had to sneakily get her address without alerting to the fact that a cool little gift would be winging it’s way to her soon… what follows is her genuine experience upon receiving the unexpected gift – Ed.

One of the main objectives of ordering a Pamper Box, apart from showing the recipient that you care, is the element of surprise. When my Pamper Box recently arrived on my doorstep, I was definitely surprised! In fact, I was blown away. Already, the gift was a success.

Upon opening it, I immediately began to get excited! Even the sight of the box itself made me feel like a kid at Christmas time. I opened the lid, unraveled the tissue paper and began to explore.

It was perfect for me. I recently have not been feeling the best due to a personal issue, and the contents of the box automatically lifted my spirits!

♥ Firstly, a book full of inspirational thoughts and quotes – something I could definitely keep close when I was feeling down.

♥ Also included was a beautiful aromatic dream bag to slip in between my pillows to help me sleep and dream at night. This smells beautiful and has brought a very calming element to my bedroom.

♥ I also found stress less bath bubbles, which are an absolute essential for chilling out.

♥And last but not least, no Pamper Box would be complete without the yummy chocolates included! I must admit, they were the first thing that I tackled, and my husband found his way over to “help” me with these!

My Pamper Box definitely lifted my spirits and brought a smile to my face. It was not only the contents of the gift itself that did this, but the element of surprise when it arrived and the thought that a friend had thought to send it to me. It was indeed great for my body, mind and soul.

A girl will search far and wide for the perfect eyebrow specialist, even say, New York, (a review I will be doing myself later this year) but I’ve found one that is closer to home, situated in South Perth in a hairdressing salon called Carole Graf is a girl by the name of Kerry Lavell, and she is in my opinion, Perth’s eyebrow queen.

When I step into her humble space, which is a smallish room at the back of the hair salon, I am welcomed with an enthusiastic and smiling Kerry, who is the warmest of human beings. I lay down on the bench with my knees over a soft towel (elevating my legs for comfort) and my head rested face up with neon lights above.

Kerry will ask me how my day is and start straight away on sculpting my eyebrows to perfection. It is a seamless process and Kerry takes care and effort with each brow. 20 minutes later and I view my brows in a hand-held mirror, she pats tea tree oil to soothe the waxed off skin and I’m set to go.

Commanding $30 for a tailored eyebrow sculpt, Kerry had been hyped up by a raving friend who had recommended me to her, fear not though – she lives up to the hype!

My eyebrows are in the best ‘shape’ they have been in years, actually, ever. Beauty therapists from rival, up-market day spas were in awe of them! That’s when you know you’re onto a winner.

Kerry also offers other beauty treatments on her list of specialties, including facials and peels all at reasonable prices.

Situated in the heart of South Perth in the MeadowVale Shopping Centre is Kerry Lavell Beauty:

Shop 6, 298 Mill Point Rd, South Perth WA 6151

Opening Hours: Tues 9-5, Wed 10-8, Thurs 9-5, Fri 9-5, Sat 8:30-2

For appointments with Kerry, contact her on: 0420 973 447.

Revive Day Spa, Mt Hawthorn

After visiting Thailand a year ago, I have recently become nostalgic for the hour-long-full-body-massage. Bearing in mind that these are around 20 times the price here in Perth, I browsed various internet sites for the best value I could find and ended up at Revive Day Spa, Mount Hawthorn early on a Saturday morning.

Upon entering I was ushered into a comfortable, dimly lit lounge area where I filled out a personal information sheet regarding any medical conditions and the like. I was then greeted by the massage therapist, taken to change into a dressing gown and slippers and taken into the massage room.

Covered by a towel I lay on a comfortable table surrounded by candles in a dark room. I noticed it was warmer here than at other day spas, where I was covered in goose bumps. The music was a sort of generic Chillout Mix with some questionable remixes; however it was a change from the usual ‘Sounds of the Jungle’ that day spas tend to play. The therapist started with a decolletage and scalp massage; then worked her way down my right arm, leg, foot and back up the left side.

As she concentrated on particular pressure points and muscle attachments, I could tell there was a background of thorough training in massage therapy. I was then told to lie on my stomach and was asked if there were any particular areas of my back to be focussed on – to which I replied ‘all areas’. This ended pleasantly with a hot towel placed on my back to remove the massage oil.

When the massage sadly came to an end I was asked to dress and escorted back to the lounge, where I was provided with herbal tea and a fruit salad. I was pleased to be given time to recover, as by this stage I was feeling extremely groggy yet very relaxed. The therapist saw me out and in my half-asleep state I tried to show my gratitude for what was a really enjoyable experience.

Zumba!

I’d heard a lot about Zumba, from the advertisements on TV to the seemingly overnight explosion of people talking about it on Facebook, and now the appearance of a class at my local gym. The curiosity was too much – I had to go and see what the fuss was about, and of course to join in the ‘Cardio Party!’

So I grabbed a girlfriend and we both went off to see if Zumba really did live up to the hype. I can officially say – it did! We went on a Tuesday night, and it was very busy. I’d estimate there were probably about 70 people there.

We went to the class in Warwick, however there’s Zumba available all over Perth (log on to http://www.danzaloca.com to find a class near you). There is also Zumba Gold, a low impact class for people recovering from injuries or the elderly. Danza Loca run 66 classes across Perth and more are opening up all the time so you are bound to find one nearby! It costs $10 per class, and you get a 20% discount when buying a 10 lesson card.

Zumba is marketed as being suitable for all ages, which I think is a really big point of difference from other classes that do not advertise this fact.

As our instructor -Tass – walked in… I thought “If that’s the sort of body you get from Zumba, then I will definitely be coming back!”. Tass started the class with a bit of a pep talk about what to expect from Zumba and an overview of the moves that we’d be doing during the class. It’s a mix of meringue, salsa, cha cha and – which sounded really exciting as I’ve got a dance background and always wanted to try something a bit more exotic than jazz! Tass explained the importance of enjoying the class and getting into the moves – his motto seemed to be “free your mind, and your ass will follow!” and it dawned on me what we were in for.

The music started and we launched into the first routine, which was fantastic and definitely broke everyone into a sweat. The class then hit full pace and we were jumping, shimmying, meringue-ing and (most of all) laughing all the way through. The entire class is set to a soundtrack, featuring some songs that I recognised and some that I did not. This was great as it really helped to maintain the energy in the class, and Tass didn’t really need to shout out instructions as he was up on a stage at the front demonstrating.

The best part for me was how easy it was to pick up the moves, there were some people there who were Zumba experts, and some Zumba first-timers, like me.

The main focus of Zumba is the cardio aspect of it, however there is lots of oblique twisting as well, which I found to be quite beneficial and I was definitely sore the next morning.

The class goes for 55 minutes – there’s 10 minutes of warm up and explanation, then 40 minutes of actual Zumba-ing. This is more than enough to get you feeling like you’ve had a great workout! At the end, there was a 5 minute cool down and stretch, which was also done to the Zumba music.

I left feeling energised but not exhausted as is often the case after a fitness class. I would highly recommend Zumba, although it’s popped up really quickly it’s definitely not one of the fad classes that we’ve all seen come and go. It’s a great hour class, grab your friends and make an evening of it!

Acupuncture doesn’t really have great connotations for those who don’t know about it. It contains the word “puncture”, who would willingly put themselves through that?!

I would. This week I visited mi:skn for a complimentary Facial Rejuvenation Treatment. The idea of having needles stuck in my face wasn’t my idea of fun. However, I have to say, I’m converted.

Francesca owns and runs mi:skn, the first Perth clinic to focus purely on cosmetic acupuncture. Other clinics may provide these treatments, but they’re not specialised. Having studied in the UK for four years to get her acupuncture qualification, she then went on to study for another two years to become a specialist in the field.

Forever learning, Francesca has developed her own unique approach and she’s been working in cosmetic acupuncture ever since.

The Facial Rejuvenation Treatment works to break up the natural collagen structures in your face. This process causes the body to try to fix it, and over the course of several treatments, plumps up those “life lines”. Now it won’t be as drastic as Botox, however, it will be more natural and more gradual. Research shows that Botox can cause other areas to become more susceptible to “life lines”.

Now, don’t be mistaken, cosmetic acupuncture doesn’t just work to fill in those lines, it also works with acne, headaches and cellulite. Francesca told me of one young lady who had a rather bad case of acne. The purple colour had reduced in just one session. It can also address headaches for those who are prone to them regularly. There is also a non-acupuncture option for Facial Rejuvenation if you’re not so sure about the needles.

Of course, you don’t have to be older to get these treatments; it’s a preventative approach to aging. It’s natural to age; we’re just slowing it down a little.

Your medical condition will be taken into account and if you have very sensitive skin you can rest assured that only natural essential oils are used in the treatment. If you’re not one for needles, you don’t have to worry, they are very fine and flexible enough to bend without snapping.

The music is relaxing and Francesca talks you through the process. The treatment starts with a hot towel on the face to open pores and extract impurities. A facial massage wakes it up and prepares the skin for the treatment. Jade is used to start smoothing some of those lines and cool the face down.

Francesca took my pulse before starting the acupuncture. She could tell a lot more than just whether or not my heart was beating. On the left, she picked up that I’m susceptible to back pain during my cycle. On the right, she could tell that my body wasn’t processing fluids properly. Correct on both accounts.

Needles are also placed in the lower leg to balance your natural energies and make sure not all your blood and energy rushes to your head.

Everyone is different, but for me, the needles didn’t hurt. I could still move my face and legs while the needles were in, without hurting myself, or even feeling them most of the time.

You’re left for twenty minutes before the needles come out. You can use the time to meditate or just relax. I tried to meditate, but my mind kept wandering, so I just relaxed and had some “me” time. After the treatment, I felt more awake; I could already feel that my face had more tone and it felt a lot fresher. Even if you just want something different to a facial, I would recommend this treatment.

A Facial Rejuvenation Treatment is $120, and for the best results it is good to go once a week for ten weeks. There is a discount for purchasing all ten treatments. They also have a member’s option which is cheaper again.

Mi:skn is located at 307 Lord St, Highgate, on the corner of Court St.

Winter is the perfect time to get poppin. Picture this: snuggled up by the heater with a loved one, pet or solo (we don’t judge!), your favourite movie playing & the scent of popcorn wafting around your house like it’s your own private cinema. I’ve sold myself on it and I don’t even have a popcorn maker yet!

I was reminded of this old-fashioned, simple treat by a friend a few nights ago on a particularly frosty night. We made a huge bowl of FRESH fat-free popcorn, none of this microwave packet super oily, super salty business! Granted, we did add a smidgen of butter & a sprinkle of salt to taste, but it was a fairly pure experience. Sweet tooth’s could even use a light dusting of icing sugar, but you didn’t hear it from me!

The great thing about popcorn is that it really satisfies the desire for something crunchy, usually I would be very likely to reach for a packet of chips or biscuits, this is a much healthier alternative!

Here’s what you’re gonna need:

♥ Popcorn Maker

Crazy Popper or other popcorn maker! This one is the cheapest I could find at $49.95 RRP

♥ Popping Corn

This brand can be found at supermarkets, and is about $1.50 for 100 grams. Bargain.

♥ The desire for a healthy, tasty treat.

♥ A couple of minutes.

VOILA. So much better for you than chippies or chocolate!

My popcorn lovin’ girlfriend lamented to me that she wished someone would bottle the scent and sell it: lucky for her, the fragrance company Demeter has got it covered!

Popcorn Fragrance!!!

Get popping the next time a chilly night rolls around, and let me know if you do!

Be well,

Popcorn converted Annette.

xoxo

Darling artist My Paper Crane has come up with a way for us to keep in mind what fruit & vegies would be best for us to buy organic and which ones we can skip if need be.

Absolutely adore it! You should still make sure to wash all your produce thoroughly (including meat!) before consumption to help shake off any pesticide residue, but this handy guide should have a place in all health conscious wallets!

Organic food may currently cost a little more, but aren’t you worth it?! The money you spend on organic food now, could possibly be saved on health-care later… plus you’ll have a feather-light conscience knowing you’re helping the environment & giving your body the best possible nutritious food available!

If your local supermarket doesn’t stock any organic produce, let them know you’re interested in buying it!

There are plenty of places in Perth that stock organic produce / groceries & I’ll be highlighting some of the best for you soon, but for now, pop on over to My Paper Crane & download the sweet chart to help you make great food choices!

Found via the Bloom Cosmetics blog.

♥

I’ve long been the type of person to leave things until the last minute, am perpetually late, and disorganised would probably be my middle name if my parents could have seen into the future! Lucky for me, they couldn’t and I ended up with a more suitable “Kristen” instead of “Disorganised”.

This applies to many aspects of my life, including getting fit & healthy. I’ve put it off for SO LONG now. Sporadically taking up yoga classes for a term, not showing to half of them, joining the gym for a few months going 4 days a week then going cold turkey… I think a lot of people can relate to my inconsistencies.

Personally, I’ve no need to lose weight – I’m actually trying to put some on, but I’ve never been “FIT & HEALTHY” in that ideal way where flouncing up a flight of stairs comes easily, thieves need not take chase because I’d be worn out after the first two steps… you get the idea!

I also think there’s a fairly large misconception going around that thin = fit. I’ve always been thin, but unfit & still get incredulous looks when I talk about my exercise regime and frequently hear “But you don’t need to exercise!”.

However, I do! I really, really do! I decided this year was going to be the year that I really went for it and am going for fitness slowly but steadily by attending 2-3 yoga / body balance classes a week to start out. I feel so much more positive in general, I can feel my strength improving week by week (such a good feeling!) and I’m already noticing changes in the way my body looks & what it is capable of.

Everyone should work towards their own personal fitness & wellbeing goals, no matter what category you’re thrown into by the people around you “too skinny”, “too big”, “too old”.. ignore them and do what you need to do that is going to make you feel your best!

For me this means the aforementioned exercise classes, a massage once a month, spending as much time as possible with my gorgeous friends, connecting with like-minded people (that’s you!) & eating healthily to the best of my ability!

What are your own fitness & wellbeing goals? I’d love to hear!

Be well,
