Beauty & Wellbeing Routine: Stuart Watkins, Holistic Fitness and Lifestyle Coach.

Stuart Watkins, photo by Natasja Kremers Photography

First up, briefly tell us a little bit about yourself!

I absolutely love what I get to do each day. Helping people live to their fullest potential is something that brings me so much joy. As well as my line of work I love surfing, the outdoors, travel, photography and live music.

Over the summer I am teaching Akhanda Yoga at various outdoor locations. They are donation based classes so you can pay as little or as much as you like per class. It’s all about getting back to nature and letting your true nature shine.

Tell us about your daily beauty routine.

Hmmm, very simple routine. Beauty starts from the inside so I just make sure I’m eating a nice natural, organic diet. Lots of greens, lots of omega oils and plenty of variety in the diet. As well as that I make sure I’m hydrated, more so for my energy, but it helps to keep the skin stay healthy too. When the inner body is in harmony and the mind is relaxed our natural beauty shines.

What’s the one beauty treatment you can’t live without? And your favourite place to have it done?
I don’t really get beauty treatments done, but I do get regular ayurvedic massages at K.A.L.M Wellness Centre with Kate Morris.

Who do you trust with your hair in Perth, and why?

Angelina at Guy’s Grooming in the city. In the past, every time I’d get my hair cut it would take about a week or 2 for my hair to look ok. After Angelina cuts my hair I’m happy with it straight away. She gives an amazing head massage too.

Navratna Oil

Favourite budget / at home beauty treatment?

Pranayama or yogic breath work and meditation. Everyone after practicing breath work in yoga and meditation just glows incredibly. The eyes are clearer, the skin glows and this inner peace just shines from the person. Occasionally I’ll do a bit of a face and body scrub using ground up flaxseeds with a bit of water. After washing that off with cool water I massage Navratna Oil into any muscles that feel like they need some love.

Your three, absolutely cannot live without, favourite products?

I don’t really use any external products apart from what I just mentioned.

I always make sure I have CHYAWANPRASH at home. It’s an ancient Indian herbal tonic that’s loaded with vitamin C.

I always make sure I have Vitamin C food complex, B food complex, magnesium and Vitamin E from an amazing brand called New Chapter.

Young baby coconuts!

Do you have any secret tips you use to keep looking / feeling great?
Coconut water every day. Fresh from a young coconut. So healing, energising and hydrating.

What beauty treatment/ wellbeing activity would you love to try but haven’t yet? (Due to time, money, scared etc!)

Everything I have been curious about trying I’ve already tried. I’m willing to give anything a go, if it makes sense to me.

Describe a typical day of eating for you.

I eat lots of raw foods throughout the day. I have about 5-6 meals spread throughout the day. Lots of fruits, vegetables and nuts. Lunch is usually my biggest meal. Each day of eating varies depending on how much energy I’m using, so I just listen to my body and give it the natural fuel that it needs.

Describe your fitness routine.

I usually cycle to and from work and if I’m in different locations throughout the day I can end up cycling quite a bit. I love cycling around Perth! I practice yoga for an hour to an hour and half 6 days a week. I also do strength and conditioning twice a week as well as surfing whenever possible and catching up with friends to play different sports.

Do you take part in any alternative therapies or take supplements? If so, discuss.

Yes, I do regular chakra meditation, and get regular ayurvedic massages. I sometimes get reflexology and flower essence massages too. I take a quite a few supplements. Here they are; Yellow pea protein, cell food, the vitamins I listed above from New Chapter, Chywanprash, spirulina, maca, ashwaganda, triphala, Udo’s Oil and chia seed.

Day Spa Review: Sodashi Chakra Balancing Treatment, Bodhi J.

Photo of Chakra Balancing Treatment by Sodashi

As soon as I read about the 90 Minute Sodashi Chakra Balancing Treatment on the Bodhi J website, I knew we had to be together.

“Deeply meditative, this experience aims to bring the chakras into alignment through a fluid combination of massage, specific essential oil synergies and beautiful crystals. Working subtly on the energetic body with profound effects, this truly unique experience leaves you feeling calm and in a state of harmony, resulting in an increase in wellbeing and spirituality.”

Yes please. Now, as you can imagine, one prerequisite for this treatment is a mind that is at least 2% open. Energy therapies are a relatively new player in the game and as such are often viewed with a skeptical eye.

I can’t say for certain they work, all I can let you know are my experiences, and after this treatment I felt on cloud 9 for about 3-4 days after!

Check out Chakras for Beginners for a little more info before reading on!

♥ ♥ ♥

Going to the day spa can be a very intimate experience, we allow ourselves to be touched and comforted by people we usually don’t know, this treatment specifically requires you to be completely undressed (although your modesty is certainly preserved at all times), however disposable underwear is made available for those who might not feel so comfortable going au naturale!

♥ So after taking it all off, I’m directed to a beautiful eco-bathrobe. It’s all about the little things, and these unique robes are made of flax and are very low in pesticides, herbicides and fungicides! Pretty impressive and really comfortable, they are also available to purchase for $130.

♥ A quick test is done to see which of my chakras are imbalanced, turns out my 3rd (emotions) & 5th (communication) chakras could do with a bit of work!

♥ Before each chakra (from the base of the spine to the crown of the head) is gently massaged and worked on, I’m asked to inhale a Sodashi scented oil (see above) that corresponds to and will help to balance that particular chakra. It is incredibly relaxing and the scents are divine.

♥ After each point is worked on, a beautiful crystal is placed on my skin.

♥ I have to note at this point that I’m not someone who falls asleep easily, but I found myself dozing off at least twice!

♥ Once the back is done, the front is worked on (again, modesty preserved).

♥ The treatment finishes with a relaxing rest in the lounge area, some fresh fruit, tea and chocolates 🙂

The whole thing was AMAZINGLY relaxing. I walked out of there on a cloud and stayed there for 3-4 days. As someone who is very busy and always searching for ways to reduce stress, I found this to be one of the more effective treatments I have tried in a while!

If you have the moolah, the Sodashi Chakra Balancing Treatment weighs in at $185 for 90 mins, then I would highly recommend you high-tail it down there before even finishing this article.

If not, start wishing upon stars or putting away a dollar a day because this treatment is definitely worth your hard earned.

I wish I was back there right now! *dreams*

Beauty & Wellbeing Routine: Emma Gilbert, The Raw Kitchen.

Heath & Emma

First up, briefly tell us a little bit about yourself!

Hi, I’m Em – I’m a 22 year old uni student and co-owner of The Raw Kitchen. The key aim of the The Raw Kitchen is to share and teach people about not only the incredible benefits of including raw living foods into our diets, but also how delicious they can be!

We currently run a raw food and smoothie bar down at The Fremantle Markets, where we also stock a wide variety of products, books, and appliances. We run raw food workshops and events and now have a RAW catering trailer out on the roads also hitting the local festivals and events!

Tell us about your daily beauty routine.

Fast and simple due to necessity! In the mornings I rinse my face with fresh water, while my evening shower is my main opportunity to cleanse my face and body using a natural, organic body wash or soap. I’m not too fussy with anything beyond chemical-free ingredients so I alternate between brands like Suki and Natural Instincts that offer great value, affordable hair and body products.

What’s the one beauty treatment you can’t live without? And your favourite place to have it done?

I’m not sure if a massage technically classes as a beauty treatment, but this is certainly the one indulgence I pick first every time! Perth’s best kept secret has got be the training colleges – I’ve had many a wonderful massage from students at Endeavour College of Natural Health for $20-$30!

Who do you trust with your hair in Perth, and why?

I very rarely get my hair cut professionally – in fact I quite enjoy snipping away at my ends on my balcony!

Favourite budget / at home beauty treatment?

Coconut oil and/or cacao butter – these natural oils are such amazing moisturisers! I use them on my body, hair, lips and face (as well as in my food!) and they leave you feeling so beautiful and soft and without any fear or additives or chemicals, just pure, natural goodness.

Your three, absolutely cannot live without, favourite products?

– Good quality essential oils for when I feel like wearing a scent
– Mineral makeup – I’ve tried a few, currently I’m using an Australian brand – Claytime.
– Neem Leaf Extract – excellent for irritations, blemishes, itches. (ED: Neem leaf is also an ingredient in some La Mer products!)

Em lives on lots of whole, fresh, raw foods to keep her looking lovely!

Do you have any secret tips you use to keep looking / feeling great?

As the saying goes, it’s about what you put inside your body and I’ve certainly found this to be true. Plenty of clean, pure water, ensuring the largest part of my diet is fresh, raw, living wholefoods, daily movement, and daily activities that I love.

What beauty treatment/ wellbeing activity would you love to try but haven’t yet? (Due to time, money, scared etc!)

A facial from Cherry Blossoms Organic Beauty Salon in Subiaco – they use the most divine, high quality organic products from Europe.

An example of some chia porridge!

Describe a typical day of eating for you.

Breakfast is often light – either a smoothie, juice, fruit, a salad, chia porridge or similar.

For lunch/dinner we very rarely go without a big salad packed with greens, sprouts, avocado, seaweeds and then whatever other veg is in season and colourful!

For snacks I might have some flax crackers and dip or vege sticks, nuts, nori rolls, fruit, or a blended soup.

And of course desserts! At the moment I’m really into frozen berries and mango, but I’m fortunate to live in a house where there is often some wonderful raw creations being experimented with so there’s often something delicious in the freezer to finish the day.

Describe your fitness routine.

Time is of the essence so I have to try to fit exercise into my day wherever I can. This often means walking/riding to uni, early morning walks, walks to the shops, stretches on the bedroom floor…and just in the last few weeks my partner and I have started attending classes as casuals at the local gym which has offered a great bit of variety and motivation.

Do you take part in any alternative therapies or take supplements? If so, discuss.

We alternate a large range of different superfoods and minerals in our smoothies and daily intake. Seaweeds (spirulina, chlorella, modifilan etc) are something I make sure to get in one way or another everyday. Chia is another being such an excellent source of omega 3s, calcium and more. As far as alternative therapies go, I’m lucky that my partner Heath is a naturopath so he takes care of my health needs!

Emma & Heath can be found at their food stall, The Raw Kitchen, at the Fremantle Markets on the weekends! x

Wellness WA Christmas Wishlist!

We wish you a Well Christmas!

With less than one month to go, I thought it was high time to spread the word about what I’d like to be receiving under my little faux-pine tree come December 25th… feel free to steal any of these ideas to show your loved ones!

1 ♥ The health, wellness & happiness of all of those who are dear to me. This goes without saying, but is nice to remember and put at the top of my list 🙂

2. ♥ Spa Pedicure at Bodhi J Day Spa ($75) ! This place is fast becoming a favourite of mine, 100% natural and organic prods are used, and the staff are lovely. I’ve never had a spa pedi before and my feet are feeling a little sad, so receiving this would make them grin (if they had mouths…)!

3. ♥ Full Body Massage at either Cove Spa, South Perth ($105) or Nourishe, Claremont ($50). I LOVE MASSAGES! Love love love. There, I said it. If you’ve yet to experience one, I can recommend either of these two places to send you to relaxation heaven.

RRP $49.

4. ♥ Philosophy Under the Mistletoe Holiday Gift Set – four mega-tasty sounding Christmas themed glosses in peppermint bark, candy cane, pink frosted cookie & cherry christmas. Lips will be sorted for the next 6 months!

RRP $58

5. ♥ Philosophy Ice Cream, You Scream Gift Set – Okay, this one is almost impossible to say no to. Vanilla icecream paired with butterscotch drizzle and caramel drizzle and these guys can be used as a body wash, bubble bath OR shampoo. What?! Limited Edition makes this as good as under the tree already, if I don’t receive it then it will be my gift to myself! 🙂 YUM!

RRP $ 45

6. ♥ Philosophy Have a Cherry Christmas – What can I say? I’m addicted to the Philosophy range, how can you blame me when their gifts are so flippin cute?!

Cherry scent has always been a favourite of mine and Cherry Christmas satisfies both the lips and the body with its ultra red lip gloss and sweet n tangy body wash / bubble bath / shampoo. Delish! x

7. ♥ Health and Beauty Magazine Subscriptions – Specifically Good Health and Wellbeing Magazine, my two favourites!

8. ♥ The Geography of Bliss by Eric Weiner (RRP $ 24.95) – A book I found out about from The Happiness Cocktail, basically the author travels the world to discover what countries are happiest, which ones aren’t and possible links between the two. Fascinating stuff.

9. ♥ 10 Class Pass for Yoga Moves – This yoga studio is currently topping my list of favourite places to do yoga in Perth. The quality of instructors is extremely high and it’s a really zen little environment just across from a lake. The 10 class pass would make sure I get down there more often!

Carrot, Zucchini & Parsnip Frittata Fingers… yes please.

10. ♥ A Personal Vegetarian Chef – To the best of my knowledge this doesn’t exist in Perth, but please feel free to prove me wrong. PLEASE!!! ; )

I could go on all day but better wrap it up at 10!

Tell me, whats on your Christmas Wishlist?

Be well,

Annette

Beauty & Wellbeing Routine: Jess Ruiz, Stylist for The West Australian.

Jess

♥ First up, briefly tell us a little bit about yourself!

Perth born and bred, I am a freelance fashion writer and stylist. I fell into the industry quite accidentally, not really knowing what a stylist did, but I seem to get a continuous stream of work, so I must be doing something right! I’ve been doing this for just over five years and really love my job.

♥ Tell us about your daily beauty routine.

I use my holy grail of a cleanser, Neostrata Facial Cleanser every morning in the shower (this is really bad, right?) Then I moisturise with whatever free sample I found in a magazine or goody bag. As I get older, I’ve noticed my skin is much drier so not a day goes by where I don’t moisturise my legs and arms. Sunscreen is also a must, I’m really paranoid about wrinkles and getting older.

♥ What’s the one beauty treatment you can’t live without? And your favourite place to have it done?

Without a doubt, I love facials, extra-super-long massage ones. I was pretty fortunate to have the best one ever done at the Bellagio Day Spa in Las Vegas a couple of years ago. Locally, I think Lotus Beauty in Kardinya is consistently the best. The girls don’t babble on when you’re trying to relax, they do a great job and use products that work well on my skin.

♥ Who do you trust with your hair in Perth, and why?

Julie Dowding at Wisp Salon in North Perth. I like that she is the only one that works in the salon, so I’m never passed onto five different apprentices (I can avoid answering what I’m doing on the weekend five times, excellent). Also, she has a delectable selection of herbal teas and occasionally opens on a Sunday for busy people, like me.

♥ Favourite budget / at home beauty treatment?

A dance in my bedroom also gets my skin glowing.

♥ Your three, absolutely cannot live without, favourite products?

Neostrata Facial Cleanser. Pelactiv Deep Cleanse. Vaseline.

♥ Do you have any secret tips you use to keep looking / feeling great?

When I exercise, cut out meat from my diet and am generally happy with how life’s going, I seem to get the most compliments. Funny, I spend so much money on products and I probably don’t really need them!

♥ What beauty treatment/ wellbeing activity would you love to try but haven’t yet? (Due to time, money, scared etc!)

Bikram yoga. Oh no, wait, that sounds like torture! I guess I’ve always wanted to go on one of those weekend detox yoga retreats where you aren’t allowed to speak to anyone or carry a phone. That sounds like a dream to me.

♥ Describe a typical day of eating for you.

I always start off with a healthy breakfast, but kind of go downhill from there.

During Summer, I’ll typically eat greek yoghurt with strawberries, blueberries and bircher muesli for brekkie.

With my job I’m often on the road, so I usually have to pick up lunch on the go. I’ll try to go for a salad or healthy wrap, but if I’m ravenous I won’t hesitate to grab a burger and icecream.

Dinner totally varies. Some days I’ll eat a huge Spanish dish that is force-fed by my mother, other days I’ll just have some grilled fish and vegies.

Throughout the day I’ll eat pretty much anything I crave, and at 3pm it’s usually Cherry Ripe or Spearmint Aero.

♥ Describe your fitness routine.

Recently, I’ve joined a ladies netball team with people that are much more skilled and competitive that I am. They yell at me to tell me I’ve gone the wrong way or am about to step over the line, but I’m grateful that at least I’m working up a sweat.

I also go for an hour walk/job at least twice a week just to clear my brain. Motown is my soundtrack.

I love Reformer Pilates and used to do it twice a week, but have got a bit slack (and poor) lately. I want to start up again really soon!

♥ Do you take part in any alternative therapies or take supplements? If so, discuss.

My chiropractor and good friend, Dr Li Chia Cheong, at Nervana is my saviour. She cracks my neck and back every week and I’ve noticed that I’ve been feeling much happier and less lethargic since seeing her.

Thanks Jess!
