Product Review: Aesop Sage and Zinc Facial Hydrating Cream SPF 15.

The sweet, sweet product in question.

So. Summer’s coming. And you know as well as I do that it’s going to get freaking hot. And that sun is going to be beating down on your face like it’s nobody’s business. So let’s talk about what you are going to do to protect yourself…

I don’t really think I should have to say ‘wear sunscreen’ I think if you have any common sense at all you’ve got that bit by now. But, I do probably think it’s worth reminding y’all to wear it everyday. And here’s where things get a little tricky. Because Sunscreen is so thick it can be a bit rough on the skin on your face to wear it everyday, it can be a bit oily and it doesn’t really smell that great either, not to mention if its SPF 30 it can actually make your face look a weird shade of white (right guys?) so I understand if you’d think of skipping out on wearing it everyday.

Enter; Aesop’s Sage and Zinc Facial Hydrating Cream SPF 15 . Ordinarily I would not even seek out a sunscreen product like this (what’s the point?) but I was buying shampoo and they gave me some free samples. And I was really impressed. The texture wasn’t oily and the smell didn’t make me feel like I was at a sports carnival (interestingly enough the sage leaf/sandalwood smell that doesn’t do it for me in the shampoo really works for the sunscreen) and it has micronised zinc oxide in it which means it’s actually forming a barrier between your skin and the sun but it doesn’t cause whitening or clogged pores. Perfect for everyday use all year round. This is one product that moved from sample to staple in my life. And I’m so glad.

It retails for $43 for 40ml, which might seem a bit expensive but if you protect your skin from the sun now then you’ll save a ton later on. Think of it as an investment.

You can buy it from David Jones, Remedy in Fremantle or Leederville or if you like to do the online thing…

Beauty Salon Review: Refresh Facial at Skatt, Mount Hawthorn.

When Skatt first opened a couple of years ago, I am sure I’m not alone when I say that I thought it was a bit of a gimmick. The bright pink, imposing building on a seemingly quiet, conservative Mount Hawthorn street screamed “different”.

However, I put my opinion on their choice of décor aside and went along to get the “Refresh Facial” which is $65 – on the cheaper side for a facial – which was the first positive.

When I arrived, I was taken through to a treatment room by the therapist. Unfortunately she didn’t tell me her name, and I forgot to ask at the end…must always remember to do this in future!

The treatment rooms at Skatt are located at the back of the building, the hair salon is at the front and is the first thing you see as you walk in.

The treatment room was fairly small but heated to a pleasant temperature and they had some ‘chillout’ music playing over the speakers which added to the atmosphere nicely.

The therapist began with a skin analysis which involved a magnifying light-dealy that she shone onto my skin. She talked me through some positive and negative points about my skin which I really liked, and she recommended ways in which I can improve the appearance of my skin.

The very best bit about all this was that she did not try to sell me anything! Skatt use Dermalogica products which I think is great – and even better that they don’t try to push them onto the clients as I believe that is the first way to turn off any clients from potentially returning in future. Other salons could do to take notice of this.

Next, my skin was cleansed twice, exfoliated, masqued and moisturised. On the website it states that extractions are included, but this was not part of my treatment – I suppose I just didn’t have anything to extract that day!

The entire facial took about 45 minutes and was of extremely high quality. I was so impressed by my therapist and her manner throughout the entire treatment, she had a slightly firm touch which I think is good in a facial and her hands were warm too which is always a plus!

The “Skattwalk”: a focal point of the salons

Overall, the Dermalogica facial experience was brilliant
.

I have nothing but praise for Skatt and the team, in such a competitive market it is difficult to be outstanding however I believe this is exactly what they have achieved. I will definitely return and encourage anyone looking for a new beauty salon to do the same.

To add to the praise – a couple of weeks later I got a letter in the mail from Skatt containing a card for $40 off my next treatment! Fantastic – I’ll be heading back this week.

Review: Online Skincare Consultation, Facial Company.

Working from home, I usually prescribe to the same daily uniform: yoga pants and an oversized, el-cheapo fleece hoody. Not exactly glamour. But the kind folk at The Facial Company approached Wellness WA to review their Skype live video consultation service, sending me into a panic because, my god, I may have to brush my hair and slap on a decent top.

However, there was no need to work myself into such a frenzy as founder and beauty expert Darren Clark instantly made me feel at ease via Skype video. After a couple of technical issues, Darren proceeded with the 20 minute consultation, asking me my skin concerns. I have combination skin and no major breakouts and just wanted to look at preventing future breakouts and wrinkles.

Darren also asked me what skin care I was using. My answer: not much, other than a basic pharmacy cleanser and whatever moisturiser sample I find at the bottom of my drawer. I half-expected the hard sell on products stocked on The Facial Company’s web store, but instead was given honest feedback – that the glycolic acid in my current cleanser is an excellent choice in preventing wrinkles (woohoo!). He also suggested a couple of moisturiser options to hydrate my skin and gave informative advice based on what he could see through the video, darkness under the eyes, most likely caused from sitting in front of a computer all day.

This could be you! Lying in bed, getting your skin assessed. You may have to turn on the light though!

Darren also told me about a success story – an older customer who was fed up with her skin woes, testing a heap of products over the years that never seemed to work. In a last bid attempt, she contacted The Facial Company for a 20 minute consultation. Taking Darren’s advice, she tried a few different products and was so impressed with the results that she booked another consultation. She is now truly on the quest for skin perfection that she never thought was possible.

Obviously the great advantage to this system is that you don’t even have to get out of your pjs to receive solid, professional advice. I can see this as a perfect solution to those beauty lovers out there that live in rural areas, or people that may not have access to a big range of skin care products. Also, it’s perfect for guys that want to get into a skin regime without feeling intimidated.

To book a Skype live video consultation, the process is very simple:

♥ Visit the website facialcompany.com.au and click on the Skype live consultations link.
♥ Fill out the form, selecting the date that suits you best and submit.
♥ Pay your $10 (redeemable for any online purchase).
♥ And voila! A team member from The Facial Company will confirm your appointment with you.

You’ll also need to make sure you have a microphone, a web cam, sound, internet access and Skype (which can be downloaded for free). Too easy.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from the service but I was really impressed with Darren’s feedback and he’s a lovely guy to boot.

Product Review: Joi Pure Gentle Facial Wash.

Wellness WA loves supporting local beauty businesses, so when a sample pack arrived from Joi Pure, I was hopeful that the products would be great so that I could share them with you – luckily, they are, so come with me and we’ll have a little chat about this Brigadoon based skincare company!

First of all, I have to mention the packaging – glass pots & jars which are dark blue, helping to shield the inner ingredients from damaging sunlight. They’re also absolutely adorable and I feel calm just looking at them! It’s like there’s a little apothecary in my shower!

Secondly, the ethos behind the brand is very admirable. They’re a natural & organic aromatherapy based line that focuses on the healing qualities of essential oils.

My personal favourite product was the Gentle Facial Wash:

Key Ingredients:
Organic Almond Oil moisturises and cleanses., Aloe Vera soothes and heals., Castile Cleanser gently cleanses., Pure Essential Oils: Lemon,True Lavender,Bergamot Calabrian.

♥ I found it smelled really natural with a hint of ‘herbs’, but in a good way!
♥ Cleansed my combination / breakout prone skin well & without drying.
♥ Worked really well with the Kosmea Muslin Cloth (my current favourite!)

Their products are stocked nationally & internationally including Poland & New Zealand. It’s so inspiring to see W.A. based beauty businesses excelling, we have a lot to offer the world & Joi Pure is a shining example of that 🙂

Facial Review: Ilcsi AHA Spicy Organic Facial @ Skin Deep, Como.

Ilcsi AHA Spicy Organic Facial

The Skin Deep brochure states that this is “The hottest facial in town” and they weren’t kidding! I’ve been looking for a natural facial treatment that will deliver smooth glowing fresh looking skin and I think I have found exactly what I am looking for. This all natural treatment provides fruit acids to smooth the skin and spicy paprika to boost circulation and detoxify your skin.

Ilcsi is a Hungarian based natural skin care company that relies on quality hand picked herb, fruits and vegetables. Ilcsi products contain no synthetic colouring agents, paints or animal-based ingredients. According to the Spa Universe website, Australia’s stockist for Ilsci, the philosophy of the brand is simple and natural: it accommodates to the modern need that prefers natural skincare methods, but still demands results. This is possible due to the high concentration of herbs, fruits and vegetables found in Ilcsi products.

The facial started with a double cleanse of the delicious smelling Rose Petal Cleanser and a light exfoliation. Next AHA fruit pulp is smoothed over the skin, the apple and grape extracts help to smooth and retexturise. A layer of thin Hessian is then placed over the skin and the Paprika herbal treatment applied. This is when it really starts to heat up, you feel hot but not uncomfortable. You can really feel your blood pumping. While this is kicking in to action, my therapist gave me an arm exfoliation. The mask stays on for about 15 minutes or until it dries. Some light fanning by my therapist takes away any last minute tingling. After the spicy mask is removed a lovely cold Rose Hip Gel mask was applied. This instantly took any heat in my face away. Rose Hip Serum and moisturiser were then applied which further cooled and calmed my skin.

Paprika Herbal Treatment

My skin was pinkish for about an hour post treatment, which my therapist did warn me about. The results were amazing- my skin was soft, glowing and radiant. I had someone stop me at the supermarket to ask what I use on my skin! It’s an absolutely great treatment to have pre event and the best thing about it is that you can buy the products and do it all at home; you can even do it a few times a week. As someone who has used microdermabrasion, chemical peels and Omnilux I can say that this is the most effective treatment I have ever had. I can’t wait for my next appointment!
