Food Review: The Juicy Beetroot, Fremantle.

Tofu Burger @ The Juicy Beetroot, Fremantle.

Once upon a time in a sunny little town by the sea, existed a quaint cafe nestled down a mysteriously secret lane. Those who stumbled upon this lane by chance, or a lifetime of searching, were treated to a bounty of healthy vegetarian & vegan options to fuel them for their next adventure… this cafe was known to the travellers as “The Juicy Beetroot“.

The Juicy Beetroot is, as mentioned in a weird storybook kind of way, a bit of a hidden gem in Fremantle. You most likely wont find it if you’re not looking for it, as it’s not located near the main shopping / eating district.

One thing to mention is that the dining atmosphere is EXTREMELY casual, with a mish mash of chairs & tables, mismatched plates and cups and a cooler where you go to fill your own steel cup with water. The place has a hippie / buddhist kind of vibe to it, with coloured flags and Eastern style paintings and decorations.

There’s the option to sit indoors or outdoors in the sun and under the trees, which is what I usually do to get some Vitamin D.

A word of warning: The trees that grow outside seem to be very attractive to a particular type of small bug, and if you are sitting right under one of the trees, bugs can be known to fall onto the table or your plate or yourself… so do be careful to watch out for these lest you accidentally ingest one 🙂

The Tofu Burger ($9) is fabulous and definitely worth going out of your way for. A large slab of marinated tofu on one of the most delicious rolls I have ever tasted (I think it might be Abhis Bakery) with avocado, beetroot (which I usually nix), tomato, lettuce, vegan mayo and pesto.

To wash it down I had a self concocted apple, pear & lemon juice. Tasty.

My friend enjoyed his variety of 3-4 curries and brown rice ($9), but just quietly I think the Tofu Burger was better!

Juicy Beetroot is recommended for super casual, healthy, lunchtime meals. As well as the burger and curries, they have a hot dish of the day (Pumpkin Lasagne when we were there), pre-made variety of rolls on crisp baguettes, smoothies, a mix of interesting cold salads, desserts and little sweets.

Please note they don’t accept EFTPOS!

I have never heard of this place before, sound yum though! and $9 seems really cheap?

  2. Annette @ Wellness WA says:

That’s what I’m here for 🙂 Well, I was thinking that $9 is kinda expensive for a lunch-burger – but for what you get it’s pretty great!

  3. Erin says:

Definately one of the best kept secrets in Fremantle. Spinach and Ricotta pie is amazing! Amazing!

  4. Annette @ Wellness WA says:

Oh! I haven’t tried the pie, unfortunately I’m never in Freo anymore so rarely get a chance to pop down there BUT if I ever am, the pie is on the top of my list, I want one now!!! xx

  5. Sandy says:

Ohhh but I love the curries and rice there! Yum yum.

  6. Annette @ Wellness WA says:

HOLY YUM. I’m so hungry right now, worst time to be thinking about these delightful snacks! EEEEEP! 🙂

  7. Brad Raymond says:

Photo is excellent. And your review is spot on. Unfortunately I can never go there since it became (or always was?) Monday to Friday only. But I remember my first tofu burger there, delicious, just as you describe it. What’s the marinade and prep for the tofu do you think?

  8. Annette @ Wellness WA says:

Mmmmm I’ve got no idea Brad! Thanks for stopping by 🙂 You’re the master chef so you’d probably have more of an idea hehe, the avocado inclusion is soooo good. SO CREAMY, SO DELISH!

Maybe like some vegetarian smoky liquid, I know it exists I just can’t remember what it’s called, and then pan cooked? Hmmmm, would like to be a fly on the wall in their kitchen…maybe! hehe.

I wish they were open on Saturdays too so I could race down and get a treat. Sigh 🙂

  9. shazza says:

I am an meat eater and even I looovve their tofu burger. And their salads are the best in town.

  10. Heather says:

    Hi Annette!

Wow I reallyyyyyy want to try this place out now!! I can’t wait until I go to Freo next! Might have to make a special trip… 😉

I think the smokey product you are thinking of is ‘Chicory extract’! I haven’t used it before but sounds interesting!

    Heather xo

  11. Annette @ Wellness WA says:

Ooooh you’ve got me craving it now too! Just be aware that they are only open Mon-Fri and only until 4pm I believe 🙁 So it’s difficult to get down there if you work!

Totally worth it though, take a sick day and go and gorge on tofu burgers, sunshine & juices. Sounds like a winning plan.

  12. Heather says:

I’m a uni student soooo I rekon I will have to duck down there on a free morning/arvo! 😀 But still, I go there on weekends a lot so I wish it opened weekends!! 🙁

  13. Annette @ Wellness WA says:

Pick one up for me and deliver it to me! I work close to Freo but not close enough to get there and back in half an hour! 🙁 Woe is me!

  14. Heather says:

Awwww so close yet so farrrrr 🙁 I will keep this delivery idea in mind missy! I am SO keen to try this place out!! I can’t believe it – I’ve been vego for like a year and a half and I have been so slack to try these great veggie places out in Perth! I’ve been having too much fun cooking vego food to actually go out and try the fancy stuff. Well, thats my excuse 😛

  15. Annette @ Wellness WA says:

Me too! Manna Whole foods is open on the weekend, I haven’t checked them out yet but apparently they are pretty awesome!

  16. Heather says:

OMG Manna is awesome!!!! I LOVE going there! They seriously have everything! I could spend hours browsing the shelves…and the cafe is great! Actually, for lunch today I made a salad using grated beetroot – totally inspired by the beetroot salad at Manna 😀
