Store Review: Loose Produce Wholefoods, Como.

I love wholefoods and the opportunity to buy in bulk! I’d long known my Northie friends were being well serviced by Angry Almond in Nedlands but I yearned for something a little closer to home… it’s hard living South of the River in Perth y’know!

The discovery of Loose Produce in Como therefore was like a birthday, Christmas, Easter & any other gift-receiving holiday that exists, all thrown at me in one glorious “HURRAH!”

The great thing about Loose Produce is the attention to detail that goes into presenting their many, many wares.

Nutritional information, origin & a detailed list of ingredients are presented on the majority of their products, so if you’re like me and read more backs of packets than books – you’ll be right at home.

Those with a naughty sweet tooth will be thrilled with over 50 choices of bulk lollies, while the slightly healthier sweet lovers among us will be happy with the wide range of dried fruits including blueberries & goji berries. Our baking friends will marvel at the loose cake mixtures, sprinkles and bread mixes available for sale!

Gluten-free products are well-signed as are organic options, with an “I’m organic!” sticker to help you navigate your way to chemical free wonderland.

A really novel setup they have going is the “Jar Exchange Program” whereby people with jars they no longer need can bring them down to the store and those who would like to use them to fill with produce can do so!

There’s a dedicated Asian section, pasta, herbs & spices, organic fruit & veg, organic meat and so much more… you’ll just have to go down there to check it all out!

The only thing I would change is quite nit-picky; as I’m a vegetarian I’d prefer that the cold meat (which is spread out across two fridges) be contained to one fridge so the other products that are sharing space with them have less chance of being contaminated by the meat. Aside from that, I love the whole place!

Loose Produce is a pantry organisers dream, little jars to pick up and fill with all manner of tasty delights.

When you take your presumably many choices to the counter, you’re met with Larabars, vegan cookies and more snacks than you can poke an organic stick at. Just try saying no.

LP also run a variety of workshops which you can browse on their website and often have reflexology and kinesiology experts visiting the store.

OPI’s revolutionary iPhone application! – ever wondered what a particular shade would look like on your nails, but found those plastic nail doo-dads in the beauty section too difficult? ME TOO. With this iPhone application, while it doesn’t use a picture of your actual hand, you can adjust the skin tone and nail of the image & test out every single OPI colour to determine whether or not it’s what you’re looking for, before forking out for it!!! How great is that?! A: Prettydamngreat.

Food for Thought!

Source unknown

It seems the past week/end has been our first true hit of the Winter that is to come! Electric blankets & heaters are becoming a staple, as are layers of clothing. I’ve had my first bout of the flu & hopefully my reliance on natural remedies (fresh ginger, honey & lemon tea! lots of sleep!) means my immune system will be ready to stave off any subsequent bugs that fly my way.

SO! Because it is chilly and we probably are spending more time indoors than usual, I’m going to throw a few links your way that I’ve come across recently and enjoyed.

Don’t claim it if you wont follow through – excellent advice for any beauty / spa / other businesses and also good advice for consumers too!!

Coles releases new beauty magazine! – whodathunkit? It is a great idea for those looking for budget buys, so congrats to Coles on this new little venture!

BEAUTYFull Women Networking Event – a unique networking event for women in business, complete with pedicures, reflexology & body balance. UM, sign me up!

It’s all about the chocolate – another networking event, this time in the lush surrounds of the Subiaco San Churro Chocolateria! Less related to wellbeing than the last one…but some research does say chocolate is good for you!

WA VIP Card – new beauty & wellness venture coming SOON, we’ve got some big names on board but our lips are sealed…!

Hope you’re all enjoying the start of Winter! If you have any links to great websites you think we should know about, please, send them through!

Be well,

Annette

Store Review: Angry Almond, Nedlands.

This almond does indeed look pretty angry…

I first discovered Angry Almond after I was referred there by a lady who has been living in Dalkeith for 60 years. You can’t get much more local than that, so I figured I should take her advice. She warned me that once I go there I would become addicted, and right she was.

The first time I walked into the store I was overwhelmed by the big buckets containing all sorts of wonderful grains, pulses, lentils, beans, quinoa, sugars, tea and anything else you can think of! You will also discover many tubs of nuts, seeds, dried fruit, chocolates, lollies, sesame bars, sweet potato chips, Turkish delight – you name it, they have it!

I must mention that the prices are fantastic and let’s just say I had a Turkish delight addiction for a while there…

Sweet, sweet turkish delight

There is a fridge in store that sells biodynamic milk products, tempeh, tofu and cheese, among other things. There is also a great selection of organic, fair-trade coffee beans on offer. I am personally a tea-drinker (ahem, guzzler), so I am much more interested in the bulk supply of loose-leaf green tea, oolong tea and chamomile tea, just to name a few.

There is a spice rack, Asian food section, Italian food, and a large variety of pastas…I could go on! One of my personal favourites is the section with various health-food items, such as agave, coconut oil, puffed rice, and non-dairy milks.

The Angry Almond team provides an incredible service, and this is reflected in the number of people who come buzzing through the doors to browse the exotic foods on offer or simply to pick up their regular groceries.

There is something quite satisfying about scooping up all the delicious food you want, minus the usual packaging and commercial distractions. It’s simpler. At the counter there is a plate of different products to taste-test, and if you spend over a certain amount you receive a very cool Angry Almond calico bag!

Being a uni student, there has been the odd occasion where I have gotten to the checkout only to realise that I didn’t quite have enough money to pay for everything. When I try to put items back, the lady simply insists that I take everything I wanted and pay her next time I come in! The trust I get from the owners for being a regular makes me feel valued as a customer and I really appreciate it, coming from a country town I soon realised that you don’t often get that personal touch at stores in Perth.

Healthy (ish!) Brownies!

Oh, and did I mention the prices are good? Every time I get to the checkout I am pleasantly surprised at how little the price is, and when I shop there I buy in bulk! I have been frequenting this store for three years now and I am still discovering products that inhabit this wonderful little space, so I urge you to explore Nedlands’ little secret for yourself and see what you can find! Oh, and do try the gluten-free brownies at the counter – they are divine!

Eds Note: You can also shop online for produce from Angry Almond! Check their website below, and browse their healthy morsels to your hearts content AND they will deliver to anywhere in W.A for only $3.50?! How cheap is that!

PRIMPED Lookbook Event: GOODIE BAG DISSECTION!!!

Wow wow wow. As promised, here is my discussion/dissection of the uh-maze-ink goodie bag that we received @ the PRIMPED/Zoe Foster/David Jones Lookbook event and as you can see, the bags cup runneth over!

This baby literally felt like I was carrying a bag of bricks around due to the extremely generous sizing and number of products involved.

So without further dilly-dallying I will chat about them with you!

Miranda Kerr “KORA” Organic Rich Body Lotion (RRP $44.95) – We received a full-size tube of this and were told it’s Miranda’s favourite, I was blown away! Had been wanting to try this for a while as I think she is gorge and I like her philosophy as she is hugely into yoga (like me!) + the KORA products are all organic and good for us. Delicious on the skin after a shower and before bed, I woke up with very soft skin.

David Jones Ultra Shine Lip Gloss in Pomegranate (price unknown) – this one is a HIGH favourite! The colour is divine, a deep pinky-red & the smell gives juicy tubes a run for their money. The colour stays around for ages and the gloss is nice & sticky, but not toooooo sticky. If this one is anything to go by the other colours will be awesome as well. My new fave.

Kosmea Travel Pack (price unknown) – complete with their famous 5 minute facial muslin cloth, this kit came with a hydrating rosewater mist, cleanser & SPF moisturiser. Very chuffed with this one also. ESPECIALLY THE CLOTH which I’ve been wanting to try for years due to rave reviews.

Hissy Fit Gift Kit (GWP) – some cute samples of sun protecting lip balm & moisturisers, and just adore the name!

Rimmel Mineral Foundation, Sexy Curves Mascara & Eyeshadow Compact (price unknown) – love the purple tube that the Sexy Curves comes in but have yet to try, however the wand looks a little like a sex toy / torture device so I’ll have to venture carefully…! I don’t think the other two products will suit my pale skin unfortunately so one of my friends is going to get lucky.

Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs ($29.95) – This one is a no-go for me! The product gets good reviews on the Vogue Forums, however I received the darkest shade & am a few freckles away from being an albino. For kicks I sprayed some on my legs and the resulting dark brown streak sealed it’s fate as a hand-me-down to a bronzed friend.

We also received the following items: OJON shampoo & conditioner, Miss Dior Cherie, Natio Glow, A’kin Moisturiser , OPI top coat, Revlon Plum Attraction Nailpolish, YSL mini mascara & Touche Eclat, Dermalogica samples, Endota Spa hand cream & nail file, Terax samples, Napoleon Perdis samples, PRIORI samples, Ultraceuticals samples, Burts Bees Lip Balm, Gucci perfume, Modelco Liplights, Abahna shower gel, Sally Hansen lip extreme, Dr. Hauschka Rose Day Cream & a living nature cleanser.

WHEW. So as you can see, spoiled doesn’t even begin to cover it.

I’ve just popped on some of the Kosmea SPF lotion and am going to spend some time reading Zoe’s book “Playing the Field” in the sun. It’s a great Sunday afternoon, over & out 🙂

Be well,

xoxo
