Day Spa Review: 3 Hours of Absolute Bliss at Cove Spa in South Perth!

Nestled amongst the beautiful houses and quiet streets of South Perth, Cove Day Spa provides an urban wellness oasis. Coinciding with my 6 week liver and kidney detox (a decision I deeply regretted on Australia Day!), I decided that now was the perfect time to take advantage of Cove Spa's awesome summer special- the full body cleanse!

After changing into the standard fluffy white robe I was led to the relaxation room (filled with lemon water, snacks and tea) to fill out a quick questionnaire and settle in. Shortly after I was greeted by my warm and very knowledgeable therapist Kylie, whom escorted me to my treatment room.

The full body cleanse package consists of 5 treatments:

Urine PH and Heavy Metal Test

We started off with a 20 minute health and lifestyle consultation, which included a urine pH and heavy metal check. It was exciting and very interesting. Kylie explained the results of my test and gave some good lifestyle tips including the benefits of dry body brushing and green drinks.

Far Infrared Sauna

A hidden sanctuary houses the infrared sauna and has a very tropical feel. I was given a glass of fresh coconut water to hydrate and left to myself for the next 30 minutes to relax. Infrared saunas differ from traditional saunas in that they heat the body not the air. They warm the muscles and joints and stimulate fat cells to release toxins. Afterwards I felt quite warm, but wasn’t overly hot and sweaty like I would normally be from a traditional sauna.

Full Body Massage

After hopping up onto the most comfy massage bed ever (think fluffy pillowed clouds), I was massaged all over with a special blend of detoxifying essential oils. The smell was divine and the pressure was perfect.

Body Scrub, Wrap & Chakra Balancing Facial

The sugar crystal scrub felt amazing, exfoliating every little bit of my body. I was then wrapped up while my facial got underway. Along with an awesome face massage, warm amethyst crystals were rubbed all over my face to stimulate the internal detoxifying organs and get rid of negative energy. So good!

Disco Shower, AKA Swiss Shower

Finally, I was left to rinse and re-energise in the Swiss shower. Swiss showers feature multiple showerheads that alternate warm and cold water. A highly invigorating experience! This particular shower also had flashing coloured lights (hence my nickname for it), which I was told was a form of colour therapy. One wonders whether Swiss showers are sold on Gumtree….

Finishing off in the relaxation room with a cup of the spas signature tea (a blend of cinnamon, ginger, cardamon and cloves) and a delicious bowl of probiotic yoghurt with berries, I was definitely in bliss town 🙂

Overall the service was professional and welcoming. The spa was very clean and the attention to detail was great. A perfect gift for a mother, sister, friend, yourself or even a significant male friend. Whomever for, if you’re interested in a little relaxation, detoxification and a brand new start, this treatment would be perfect!

Beauty & Wellbeing Crushes: Acupuncture, Beatty Park Pool, Exfoliation & At-Home Mani-Pedis!

Acupuncture

I've used acupuncture a couple of times before and always found it helpful. My digestion has been a bit sluggish lately, so I decided to see Jacinta at the Perth Natural Medical Centre. I find the sessions extremely relaxing and always leave with a gentle buzz of energy and feeling really refreshed. The dietary advice has been so interesting and also counter-intuitive. Apparently my system works best without cold and raw foods according to Traditional Chinese Medicine. I'm not sure where that leaves my green smoothie habit, but it's worth a go!

Swimming at the new Beatty Park Pool

I started to swim regularly in my teens and it's the one aspect of my exercise routine that has stuck. I've tried many types of exercise but, for me, nothing beats the soothing, meditative effects of lap swimming. I absolutely love it and always sleep so well after a long swim. I'm feeling very lucky that my local newly renovated pool at Beatty Park is so lovely. The works haven't been totally finished yet but it looks like the centre will be amazing when it's all done.

Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate

This is my new mantra! There's nothing like summer to make you more body conscious. I've been using the 'hot towel scrub' method lately to make my skin silky smooth. Just grab a flannel, warm water and soap or shower gel, lather up and scrub away! For my face I'm enjoying a lovely scrub from the Smitten Organic skin care range. My skin tends to be quite dry so I avoid harsh scrubs, but this one is a very gentle, creamy and really effective.

Hands and Feet Pampering

I'm loving Burts Bees Tips and Toes Kit at the moment. I'm pretty busy, so find it hard to fit in a mani-pedi and I also find them pretty boring treatments. This kit is great for some quality at-home pampering. The hand creams are also the perfect size to throw into a handbag or purse. They've thrown a yummy pomegranate lip balm into the kit too! All of their products are 'earth friendly' in fact they were one of the pioneer natural skin care brands as they started in 1984. It's a pretty affordable range too.

What are your favourite budget and at-home pampering tips?

What is a Positive Affirmation?

What exactly is a positive affirmation? An affirmation is a positive statement used to bring about a desired situation.

Let’s not over complicate it, that’s all it is. It’s something that we say to ourselves to create what we want. “But I’d feel silly talking to myself” I hear you say. Have you noticed that voice in your head though that does talk to you? Usually in a negative way?

So, if you’re going to talk to yourself anyway, why not say good things, nurturing things, things that will change your life for the better?!

There is a cafe in San Francisco that has made affirmations a major part of their theme, the menu at The Gratitude Cafe is in the form of affirmations such as:

I AM DAZZLING

Caesar salad with romaine lettuce, avocado, Caesar dressing, capers and Brazil nut Parmesan

I AM COMPLETE

Mediterranean plate with almond hummus, olive tapenade, live falafels, cucumber tzatziki salad and a live cracker

and

I AM ETERNALLY BLESSED

Cold-processed espresso milkshake ( I think this may be my favourite 🙂 )

How awesome is that! Fabulous food and the opportunity to set up your day in a powerful, positive manner.

There are countless stories of people who've healed themselves and changed their lives through affirmations, from Louise Hay who cured herself of cancer to Australian Denise Duffield-Thomas who created her dream job through affirmations and visualisation, as well as using the Law of Attraction.

Add to that the fact that they're an inexpensive (can't get better than free) thing to add to your routine – why not give them a try yourself?

The best affirmations are simple and easy to remember and repeat, “Every day in every way I'm getting better and better” is an oldie but a goodie, and if it's good enough for Tony Robbins who am I to argue.

Make sure to say them in the positive, present tense for example, “I am the perfect weight for me” rather than, “I will lose weight” which implies at some time in the future you will lose some weight.

Affirmations can be used for any area of life you can think of, and Tony Robbins (yes again) even talks about a couple who used affirmations to win the lottery.

What will you use affirmations for?

On a side note I've found these amazing people who also add your own personal affirmations to meditation music to make them even more powerful, these are awesome if you want to take it to the next level.

I'd love for you to choose just one affirmation and use it in as many ways as possible, say it out loud, say it to yourself while looking in the mirror, write it down ten times a day.

In the comment box below I'd love to hear about your results!

Beauty & Wellbeing Crushes: Cinnamon, Tummy Tea, MooGoo Eye Serum and…Banancakes?!

Cinnamon

If someone held my spice rack hostage and said I could only choose to save one spice, it’d definitely be cinnamon! Lately I’ve been using outrageous quantities of it in at least one meal a day.

Cinnamon helps regulate blood sugar levels and is a killer source of manganese, which is an important mineral for maintaining healthy bones.

Five ways I’ve been adding cinnamon to my diet:

♥ In greek yoghurt mixed with blueberries
♥ In coffee with a little bit of stevia
♥ In my daily green smoothie (along with cayenne pepper and ginger for a real kick up the bum in the morning!)
♥ Sprinkled on cubed pumpkin or sweet potato along with Himalayan rock salt, roasted
♥ In my banancakes (see below!)

Banancakes

I love pancakes on lazy Sunday mornings, but unfortunately they’re a “sometimes food”. I can’t even describe how thrilled I was to stumble across a “pancake” recipe with two ingredients – banana and eggs – and then to discover it tasted like banana bread…!!!!

After my first shot at making these banana-y pancakey gems, I christened them “Banancakes”. If you’re sceptical, I urge you to try these out because they are the best thing since sliced [banana] bread.

Gemma’s Banancakes

Ingredients:
♥ One medium banana
♥ Two whole, organic, free-range eggs
♥ Cinnamon!!

Method:
In a blender, whiz up the eggs until they’re frothy. Slice up the banana and add it in with a hefty pinch of cinnamon until you end up with a smooth “batter”.

Grease a frying pan with some coconut oil and pour the mixture on – smaller pikelets are easier to flip! Keep the heat on low-medium (the sugar in the banana caramelises and therefore these babies burn easily). Just like pancakes, flip the banancakes when you see little bubbles on the surface. Cook on the reverse side until they don’t feel squishy to touch – it’s about five minutes on each side.

They’re fairly moist so they don’t need any accompaniments, but they are delicious with a drizzle of organic maple syrup.

T2 Tummy Tea

This tea has helped me curb my coffee and hot chocolate addiction and up my water intake. With peppermint leaves, liquorice root, fennel seeds and calendula petals, Tummy Tea starts off refreshingly minty and ends delightfully sweet (thanks to the liquorice root). It makes for a perfect brew after a meal or snack, aiding with digestion and the sweetness tends to trick my mind into thinking I’m having dessert! Tummy Tea is sugar and caffeine-free and has been taking pride of place next to my kettle since the start of the year.

MooGoo 3 Vitamins Eye Serum

The three vitamins in the MooGoo 3 Vitamins Eye Serum are vitamins E and C (antioxidants to prevent aging) and B5 (to soothe the skin). The base is a blend of jojoba and olive oils so the product is very moisturising and you only need a little bit to go a long way.

I’ve been using this serum morning and night and have found my under-eye concealer goes on smoother now, and my dryness is improving! I’ve experienced no irritation and so far I’m impressed with how well it absorbs – even though it’s an oil, it doesn’t sit on the skin’s surface for ages, meaning you can apply it for daywear without waiting for the stuff to sink in! RRP $24.90

By Gemma Clark, who would be devastated if someone actually took her spice rack hostage.

Alternative Therapy Review: Juice Plus+ Nutritional Supplements in Perth!

3 fruit + 5 veg = Juice Plus+

Modern life can be busy, stressful and unbalanced. And everyone wishes they had a little bit more time and energy, right? It seems though, that no matter how much time you have to relax, there is always that “little extra something” that could perk you up even more. I’m sure a coffee or a glass of wine is coming to mind for most readers right now, (it’s just hit 5.00 pm as I write this actually and I could do with some vino…), but, what if you could take a couple of supplements a day that provided you with your daily nutritional requirements? Juice Plus+ does just that.

Based on whole food based nutrition, which includes juice powder concentrates from 17 different fruits, vegetables and grains, Juice Plus+ is the perfect complement to a healthy diet. It is a simple and effective way to add more nutrition from fruits and veggies to your diet and from what I’ve experienced, is a sure fire way to get some energy back in your life!

When I started using the supplements, I was in the midst of my last semester at uni so naturally, the stress of studying had resulted in me ditching my healthy eating habits, and instead favouring sugary snacks to keep me company during my late night study sessions. Not only was I eating unhealthily, I was up late finishing assignments and studying, which in effect, resulted in me sleeping and/or lazing around when I was taking a break from study. This unhealthy cycle was immediately stopped in its tracks after Juice Plus+ landed in my hot little hands! It’s claim, “The next best thing to eating fruits and vegetables”, and is it? I’d say it’s pretty close!

I started taking two fruit supplements in the morning and two vegetable supplements in the evening to complement my daily intake of fruit and veggies, and within two weeks I noticed better energy levels (not as sluggish in the morning) and glowing, clear skin! Unfortunately I came down with a cold not long after I started taking the supplements, but noticed a significantly reduced recovery time due to my extra boost of vitamins and minerals ☺

Juice Plus+ is now a part of my daily wellness routine. It has made me realise how much more valuable it is than other supplements and vitamins, as I have actually been able to see results. I have always been a big fruit and veggie eater but really like being able to up my intake of vitamins and minerals if I haven’t been able to get enough some days. For those who struggle to get their 3 fruit and 5 veg, Juice Plus+ is definitely a great option. I will always prioritise getting my fresh fruit and veg though – nothing compares!

Check out local seller Sarah’s Juice Plus+ page for more information on the product, and how to buy! 🙂
