Where Can You Buy Chia Seeds in Perth?

♥ ♥

I’m sure you’ve heard about chia seeds (or the more sexy sounding scientific name Salvia Hispanica) by now! If you haven’t, they have been taking the world by storm for the past few years with their incredible nutritional profile, essential fats, protein, minerals, vitamins and fiber.

Here are a few fun facts about chia seeds:

♥ Contains the highest known plant concentrations of omega-3
♥ Great source of both soluble & insoluble fiber
♥ A complete vegan protein
♥ Three times more iron than spinach, four times more antioxidants than blueberries, seven times more vitamin c than oranges! (source)
♥ On their own they are really crunchy (and get stuck in your teeth!) but if you leave them in water for 10 minutes, they swell to form a gel like substance so can be used in dry food preparation as well as liquids, like smoothies.
♥ In 28 gms of chia you can find: 9% of the Daily Value for protein, 42% dietary fiber, high amounts of the essential minerals, phosphorus and manganese, moderate calcium content, and trace levels of potassium and sodium (source, Wikipedia)
♥ Can you say, chia pet? These cute little guys are made from chia seeds too!

♥ I want this chia puppy!

So today I was sent an e-mail asking where you can purchase chia seeds in Perth, and I wanted to let everyone know that it is REALLY, REALLY easy!

Chia seeds have become so popular now that I’ve seen them frequently in Coles, Woolworths and IGA’s (in the health aisle), as well as your more traditional outlets – health shops.

If you’re looking for organic chia seeds I’d suggest trying Manna Wholefoods or Mt Lawley Wholefoods, but if you’re just after garden variety chia then a trip down to your local supermarket should prove successful 🙂

Chia porridge

My personal trainer, Sarah, sprinkles chia seeds on porridge for breaky, which is one really easy way to incorporate these little nutrient gems into your diet.

Stuart Watkins, my personal meditation / yoga trainer, as well as Emma from The Raw Kitchen are big chia fans as well. These three are some of the healthiest people I know!

Hope I’ve helped some of you out 🙂

Have you tried chia seeds before?

Be well,

Annette

Awsum info mate, may be worth noting that you need to crush/blend the seeds in order to get all of the goodies from them, personally use an old coffee grinder then blends them to a fine dust which is sensational for smoothies! Don’t forget to store them in an airtight container in the freezer!

I get ’em for $20 a kilo (bag of 200g for $4) at swansea street markets in Vic Park, far cheaper then IGA etc (which was the only other place i’ve seen ’em!)

p.s they go really well with wheatgerm ;D

    Hey Chris!

Thanks for stopping by, I actually thought of you when I was writing this cos I remember having a chat with you about it 🙂

Yeah apparently some of them can cruise right through you without being digested and the grinder thing is a good idea!

What else are you having in your smoothies these days?

  3. These babies are sprinkled on my morning porridge these days too! I tend not to eat my porridge on a UBD though… does that help as well? 😀

What is the difference between the black & white seeds? I buy the white seeds because they are so much cheaper.

Thanks for tip about grinding them, I will put them in the mortar & pestal before I put them in my morning smoothie.

What days are the swansea markets on?

    Hi guys,

Conor that’s great to hear!! The UBD is a desirable addition, so maybe you could look into that. Get back to me on it.

Miss Marian glad to help you xox

Rochelle, the white and black seeds have minimal nutritional differences (from my Googling), the main thing that varies the nutrient quality of either colour is where they are grown.

    According to:

The Swansea markets are on every day. Hope that helps x

I put chia seeds in my green smoothies.
I find by adding chia seeds, I feel a lot fuller and don’t snack through the morning.
I got mine from a health food store in Morley – the one opposite Coles where Nick Dale the iridologist/naturopath works. 🙂

  8. NNN says:

Hi all, seems lowest price for Chia seeds is 16.5/kg at the seed n grain place in nth bridge williams st. (cant rmbr actual name).

On a side note, sad to see how so many basic food items (that are pretty much common/poor peoples staple in 3rd world countries) that are found out to be quite healthy and good for you has their price increased for no real reasons other than money grabbing! I rmbr when my mum used to buy these for around 5/kg when I was in school… no Im not an old 50+ person 🙂 ah well classic western style money first business model

I’ve seen that Wendy but not yet tried it, I may do so now. Thanks for reminding me!!! 🙂 x
