Two Words Women Don’t Want to Hear! (Or, Hairdresser Review: Maurie Meade, Subiaco.)

I’m pregnant!!

Don’t get me wrong – we love hearing them from friends, then it’s all shrieks, hugs, and tears. But there’s one person we simply do not want to hear it from, and I’m pretty sure I can speak for the whole sisterhood here…your hairdresser.

Years of unflattering cuts, tragic colours, and massively botched home attempts, litters a rite of passage to be endured until you find, THE ONE. So when your hairdresser enthusiastically declares her impending motherhood, I understand that it takes all your strength not to pick up the buzz razor and fashion a reverse Mohawk through the centre of her perfectly sculpted bob.

Word of warning, if you’re a hairdresser about to make a life changing announcement, please don’t be offended if your clients don’t share your enthusiasm, it’s just that we know our life is about to become ruled by our fickle follicles.

When my last hairdresser drifted off into oblivion, I found myself skulking back to a major corporate salon I’d used years ago in the nineties, Maurice Mead Subiaco.

Perhaps it was a case of absence makes the heart grow fonder but I was thrilled with the service. Not only were the magazines post World War II, I was given a cup of tea and placed in front of a television showing the latest fashions, then given a head massage to die for. The act of hair washing reached a whole new level when, lying back on a black leather vibrating massage chair, the apprentice worked his magic for a good 15 minutes, all the while checking on my personal level of pressure, bliss. Numb beyond belief I watched on as my stylist, Ailsa, retrieved my card and identified the colours that had worked best for me in the past then listened to what I wanted. Not only that, she checked regularly to make sure I was happy. In the end I left the salon relaxed and feeling very special. While it was a lot dearer than my previous stylist, I’d almost pay double just for the head massage, but don’t tell them that.

Beauty & Wellbeing Routine: Penni Towner, Aussie Bombshell.

Penni Towner, Aussie Bombshell!

First up, briefly tell us a little bit about yourself!

My name is Penni Towner, Director (aka “Head Bombshell”) of Aussie Bombshell – self-confessed shopaholic and lover of French champagne.

Moroccan Oil, RRP $49.50

Tell us about your daily beauty routine.

I am fairly low-maintenance when it comes to a beauty routine. As long as my skin is clean and well moisturised, and my hair has Moroccan Oil in it, I am happy!

What’s the one beauty treatment you can’t live without? And your favourite place to have it done?

When it comes to beauty treatments, there are TWO (sorry, couldn’t just have one) women in the industry that I can’t live without.

Alison Jade, Eyebrow Specialist in Cottesloe – the woman works wonders on any brows and people DO notice the difference!

For all other waxing and beauty treatments, Sam at Iconic Beauty in Subiaco (next to Boucla) is THE BEST. I always pop in for a Shellac manicure (if you haven’t been Shellac’d, hop to it!) and when I have a few hours to spare, the Collagen Facial is AMAZING! Sam is also super quick and great at waxing which is really important for busy girls (and boys).

Who do you trust with your hair in Perth, and why?

I wouldn’t trust anyone else with my hair except Chesnie at La De Da in Shenton Park. I have tried nearly every recommended “blonde specialist” in Perth, but no-one compares to Chesnie. She gets it right first time, every time and just keeps getting better and better with her colour work!
Amelia who also works at the salon is great for blow waves and style ups. $30 blow waves also makes you want to go every week!

OPI Black Shatter Ltd Edn!

Favourite budget / at home beauty treatment?

Anything from the OPI range – a quick toe polish colour change is the perfect pick-me-up – a colour to suit every mood or moment. I just returned from Salon Melbourne where they were half price… so I bought 12 and got one free….Oops! 🙂

Chanel Bi-Phase Eye Makeup Remover – $32 USD

Your three, absolutely cannot live without, favourite products?

1. Chanel Bi-Phase Eye Makeup Remover – This is my number one beauty product. Nothing is as quick and effective for getting rid of your eye make-up. Say goodbye to panda eyes! (Available online at StrawberryNET)

2. Nars Laguna Bronzer – gives your skin a beautiful, healthy shimmer and can be used both day and at night!

3. HD Mascara by Alison Jade – I have tried every mascara under the sun but I love this one. It has the tiniest brush I’ve ever seen, but gets right to the base, giving you full, dark lashes, with no clumping!

Do you have any secret tips you use to keep looking / feeling great?

Exercise regularly, drink lots of water, get lots of sleep and stay out of the sun unless you have the right protection (slip, slop, slap, wrap!). Always treat your body with respect and think about how you want to be looking and feeling in 10, 20, 30 years’ time. Remember that your body is with you for life!

Power Plate

What beauty treatment/ wellbeing activity would you love to try but haven’t yet? (Due to time, money, scared etc!)

I really want to start Power Plate classes – I have done the research, there are just not enough hours in the day for me right now!

Describe a typical day of eating for you.

For me, my first priority is ensuring that I have protein with every meal. Breakfast sets me up for the rest of my day and you will often find me at Cimbalino in Napoleon Street, Cottesloe, before work – I’m a scrambled eggs on gluten free toast and latte regular! Thanks Cimba!

I am terrible at planning my meals, but again, I try and focus on eating some sort of protein for lunch and dinner, and minimize my carb in-take, where possible. I also drink lots of green tea throughout the day which is full of anti-oxidants.

Unfortunately, I have quite a sweet tooth and chocolate is my weakness, although I think I’m getting better at not eating it! (haha)

Pilates!

Describe your fitness routine.

I suffer from chronic back pain, so it is important to focus on building and maintaining my core strength. I try to get to a Pilates class with Donna Green at Cottesloe Sports Physiotherapy – trust me, SHE’S AMAZING!

Boxing is my favourite form of exercise, and although I’ve had some time off, I recently started training back at The Ring in Northbridge. It is such a great stress relief for me, as well as an intense cardio workout. Apart from boxing, The Ring have introduced Strength Classes which are an incredibly challenge, but I find that 90% of training in mental, and once you get into it, you feel great!

I also enjoy going for a long walk along the beachfront with my iPod cranked. I try to do that at least three times a week – it’s a great start to the morning.

Do you take part in any alternative therapies or take supplements? If so, discuss.

I take Ginseng 8000mG tablets to retain mental alertness and ensure that I am focussed for the day. Magnesium is also really important for joint and muscle care, so I take this twice a day – very important to take this if you are doing some tough training sessions! At the moment my product of choice for this is Repairware’s GMC – its delicious!

Cott Beach

How do you like to relax? What are your favourite ways to de-stress?

Spending quality time with my family and friends is also very important to me and I love sharing a laugh and a glass of wine over a meal with the amazing people in my life.

I love the beach. Whenever I’m stressed, I will go for a walk or a swim and lose myself in the ocean. The water is such an amazing colour, we are really lucky to live in WA!

Any questions for Penni, please leave them below!

Be well,

xoxo

Weekly Wellness Wrap-Up!

Kit nails! ♥

Today I’d like to share with you the beauty and wellbeing bits n pieces that have made my week – hopefully you like them, please share your wellness wrap-up too if you like!

1. Got ma nails did for FREE at the Kit event in Enex100.

And I swear it’s one of the best manicures I’ve ever had! The new season free spirits edition colour is called ‘Play Down‘ (shown above). The girls at this event were the sweetest things and I hope that Kit run something like this again soon, it was great!

2. Raw Comedy State Final @ His Majesty’s Theatre.

16 comedians did battle last night with words and wit as their weapons, the winner (Tien Tran) is headed off to the Melbourne International Comedy Festival to vie for the national title! Let me tell you, this event was fantastic. There were so many highlights I can’t even remember some of them, but I would go again in a heartbeat, laughing is also AMAZING for your wellbeing, didyaknow?

3. Super mild sunscreen for the face in the form of QV Moisturising Day Cream with SPF 30+.

I’m having a bit of a love affair with this guy, after being told off by my beauty therapist for not wearing sunscreen on my face each day. My skin is a bit sensitive and prone to breaking out, so I needed something mild, non-clogging but effective, I also didn’t want that whole white-mask business that some sunscreens try and get away with.

This stuff RULZ! It has almost no smell, is non-greasy, non-sticky, is a great base for make up and ticks all of the above boxes as well. Best of all it is only $15.99 from pharmacies/Priceline!!! It has moved swiftly up the ranks to must have product in my bathroom.

4. Retreat for one at Bodhi J Day Spa.

Last Monday I treated myself to a spa day. It was fantastic. Review to come in the next few days!

5. T2 Spi Chai Tea!

I avoid caffeine where I can (but I do love my choccy!) and as a huge lover of chai tea have been searching for a decaff alternative for a while now. In T2 the other day, I stumbled upon Spi Chai, which is exactly what I’ve been wishing for!

Ingredients: Star anise, cardamon seeds/pods, liquorice root, cinnamon, ginger, jasmine, cloves, rose petals.

It’s a beautiful blend which is soothing & mildly warming, perfect as we’re waving goodbye to Summer (finally). I have mine with Vitasoy soy milk & a squeeze ‘o honey. It doesn’t make the water really dark (coz there’s no actual tea in it unlike regular chai) but the flavour is still strong and delicious. Do try it!

What have you been doing this week to up your wellness quotient?

Be well,

Annette

Beauty and Wellbeing Routine: Julie Quach, Bathing Beauty Organic Apothecary.

Julie Quach, Owner of Bathing Beauty Organic Apothecary.

First up, briefly tell us a little bit about yourself!

I was born in WA, 27 years ago. I went to Curtin Business School and finished a double degree in Marketing and Communications. At the age of 21, I started my own business, and I have never looked back. I’m quite simple in the sense that I know what is important in life and I am realistic about my goals and direction. I’ve always had a passion for beauty, anyone who knows me can vouch for that! It only seemed natural that I used my degree as a base, and mixed in my passion, to help shape and create my life. Bathing Beauty Organic Apothecary isn’t work for me at all, it might sound really cliché but when you do something you really love there are no boundaries, just abundance.

Neal’s Yard Remedies’ Frankincense Facial Mist – $28

Tell us about your daily beauty routine.

Ok, well as you can image my bathroom is FULL of product, and I am usually “researching” (aka testing) for new brands to put on the site. At the moment, these are the products I am using:

Both morning and evening, my skin cleansing routine consists of:

Cleanser: Neal’s Yard Remedies’ Frankincense Facial Wash
Toner: Neal’s Yard Remedies’ Frankincense Facial Mist
Serum: Neal’s Yard Remedies’ Purifying Palmarosa Facial Serum
Moisturiser: Neal’s Yard Remedies’ Frankincense Hydrating Cream
Eyes: Neal’s Yard Remedies White Tea Toning Eye Gel

When I cleanse I always massage from behind the ears and down to the clavical to drain the lymph nodes.

Neal’s Yard Remedies Honey and Orange Facial Scrub – $40

I also like to treat my skin at least twice a week using these two products interchangeably:

Neal’s Yard Remedies Honey and Orange Facial Scrub
Neal’s Yard Remedies Frankincense Face Mask

As for makeup, one of my favourite products would have to be RMS Beauty’s Un-cover Up. This product is UN-BELIEVEABLE. This product is perfect for ladies who are after natural, dewy looking skin, without having to wear too much makeup.

My current primer is Alison Raffaele’s Age Response Primer. You have to feel it to believe it – it seriously gives you the MOST silky skin.

RMS- Living Luminiser, a cult product – $53

I always use RMS LIP2CHEEK- Smile and Rapture. RMS Beauty’s MOMENT lip shine, and the Living Luminiser are great for highlighting the cheeks also.

I don’t tend to use a lot of product on my eyes unless I’m going out. When I do choose to wear some colour, I always reach for the RMS Beauty Cream Eye Shadow SEDUCE.

What’s the one beauty treatment you can’t live without?

My weekly facial.

And your favourite place to have it done?

I prefer to do them myself in my bathroom, only because I am very particular when it comes to my skin and products.

Who do you trust with your hair in Perth, and why?

Hairloom in Osborne Park – Candice or Connie. They are super talented and beautiful people. They’re always traveling for work as they’re in high demand. Not many people know, but they are usually over east for fashion week, exercising their talents backstage.

Favourite budget / at home beauty treatment?

My natural manicure for sure!

The Japanese Wash Cloth – $29

Your three, absolutely cannot live without, favourite products?

Not Fair, there are so many!!!

If I have to choose, I will go with these 3…

1. RMS Beauty’s Living Luminiser
2. Neal’s Yard Remedies’ Frankincense Hydrating Cream (one of Neal’s Yard’s best selling products)
3. Japanese Wash Cloth.

Do you have any secret tips you use to keep looking / feeling great?

Exercise daily – it makes such a difference to your emotional state, I feel like ME when I work out. Its empowering and you can feel confident in anything. Mediation helps me to center and focus in the mornings. My days are very busy so if I don’t take a moment to just slow down I feel a little out of whack! Before bed try thinking about 5 things that you are grateful for, from that day. It can be anything! Even the smallest thing, as long as it has elevated you, it’s important to acknowledge.

What beauty treatment/ wellbeing activity would you love to try but haven’t yet? (Due to time, money, scared etc!)
N/A

Kefir, a probiotic rich food made from fermented milk.

Describe a typical day of eating for you.

Normally, breakfast consists of kefir and oats or a Protein shake, and coffee at the office with my beloved nespresso! I eat a healthy big lunch around 1pm. I always make sure I have some protein with salad. A snack of fruit at 4pm keeps me going until my light dinner at 7pm. I really try and stay away from carbs especially at night, but I always treat myself to something sweet to cleanse the pallet!

Describe your fitness routine.

I’m up at 6am and I usually go to the gym. I’ll do about 45mins of weight training followed by 30mins of cardio. I’ll do this about 4 times a week. Pilates on Saturday. The 3 days of the week I have off I will just go for a 1hr run with my dog Kamajii.

Remedial Massage.

Do you take part in any alternative therapies or take supplements?

I don’t take any supplements, and the only therapies I take part in are quite indulgent. This includes remedial massages (the only kind of massage I like!) and also I love Reiki, my fav place for that is up in the hills of Noosa, QLD. A Japanese couple do this treatment at their estate – amazing!

How do you like to relax?

Take a bath or get a remedial massage, pedicure or read. I’m inspired by anything creative, and cooking to me is an art. Art of taste! So I love to visit subi markets and farmers markets to get my produce fresh and spend all day cooking whilst listening to music.

Thanks Julie, you were a pleasure to interview and have provided lots to look at and think about!

If you have any questions please leave a comment below 🙂

Be well,

xoxo

Beauty & Wellbeing Crushes – Frenchy Nail Polish, Healthy Grind & Bach Flower Scents!

Hello ma petits! Welcome to another edition of Beauty & Wellbeing Crushes!!! This is going to become a regular feature, because I love to bang on about the healthy and pretty things that are keeping me rockin’ in the free world and there is the slight possibility that you may also be interested! Win-win!

Why don’t we start with my number one current crush? Ok!

1. Ltd Edn “From Paris, With Love” Seasonal Nail Duo from Mecca Cosmetica.

I fell in love with this as soon as I saw it online,
I knew it had to be mine!
I thought it’d make my nails look damn fine.

Alright, average poems aside, this is great. I’m a little bit late on the boat with this one as I believe it was meant to be a Valentine’s day thing (Paris, love, you know the story!) but that didn’t stop me from painting my nails as soon as it arrived post-Valentines.

To me, my fingertips look more like they are channeling Provence more than Paris. The deep, yet pastelly blue gives rise to the feeling that a lavender plant could sprout from my fingertips at any moment!

The packaging when ordering online is gorgeous, arriving at my doorstep tied with a beautiful thick burgundy ribbon (scuse the mess and ‘justgothomefromwork’ camera avoidance).

The red is also a great colour and has been hanging out nicely on my toes. This pack is a good treat or gift for someone special who loves polish or needs a pick-me-up!

It’s available in-store at Mecca Cosmetica, or online, whichever you fancy.

2. Indigo Grinds – Caesars Grind.

My friend from work (and swell singer) Sian, got me onto this stuff after talking about how she liked to sprinkle / grind some onto avocado on toast. The one she uses is ‘Buddha Brew’, and there is a whole variety in the range as you can see from the above image, but the one I decided to go for was the ‘Caesars Grind’ which has: sea salt, garlic, onion, tomato, parsley and thyme.

This stuff is DELICIOUS on avo + toast and sprinkled onto roast tatoes, which is all I’ve used it for so far. You can also use it in pasta, salads, soups, sandwiches, meat (if you so wish!)… pretty much anywhere.

Unfortunately I can’t seem to get the image of Julias Caesar doing the bump & grind out of my head whenever I use this, but that’s a small price to pay for this new found tastiness.

I paid $5.70 at the Subiaco Markets or you can contact Indigo Grinds to find other stockists.

3. Presence de Bach Parfum by Le Fleurs de Bach.

I was recently sent a couple of samples of Le Fleurs de Bach from awesome Perth website Bathing Beauty Organic Apothecary (check them out!). Most of us will have at least heard of Bach flower remedies, or even Rescue Remedy which just so happens to be in our first aid kit where I work!

Dr Bach was a well known physician, bacteriologist (sexy), homeopath and researcher of his time. Through his studies, Dr Bach discovered that our negative mindsets could indeed cause the onset of illness. Intent on finding a cure for the causes of illness, rather than the symptoms, he identified 38 flower remedies to help rebalance the 38 negative mindsets he identified. The flower remedies rebalance by gently kick-starting the positive emotions, and bringing them out of hiding.

Le Fleurs de Bach follow his production methods to a ‘t’. The result is some pretty phenomenal smelling scents, my favourite being ‘Presence(s)’.

Excerpt…

The uplifting, fresh and relaxing scent of Présence(s) de Bach promotes feelings of inner reconciliation and improved communication with those around you. You will enjoy a renewed and positive outlook on your environment, leading to calm and inner peace.

And I really do feel that it is relaxing! I love giving it a sniff throughout the day, I’m not sure if my communication with others is improved (you’d have to ask them!) but I do know that I love the smell so that’s good enough for me – anything else is a bonus! 🙂

You can grab it online at Bathing Beauty Organic Apothecary (available exclusively through them!)

That’s my pick for this week lovely folk, let me know if you have any questions or comments about the above, and hopefully you’ve found something new that you might like to try!

What beauty and health crushes do you have at the moment? Share the love!

Be well,

Annette
